Mas nieve, chicas!
Favor de memorizar: Juan 14:6 "Jesus le dijo: 'Yo so el camino, y la verdad, y la vida; nadie viene
al Padre, sino por mi'.
Favor de leer el Dialogo sobre "Problemas automovilisticos" en la pagina 132 y favor de contestar las preguntas en
la pagina 133 en oraciones completas.
Actividad 4 pagina 137: The students are talking about things they are going to do.
You will copy # 2, 3, 6, and 7. Then you will rewrite the sentence as if you did the activity yesterday.
Remember to change the adverbs to match your preterite tense - tonight to last night, today to yesterday,
this morning to yesterday morning, etc.
Next, you will switch each sentence to the ir + a + infinitivo construction and write another sentence.
You will have 3 sentences for each, or a total of 12 sentences.
For example: Voy a jugar al tenis hoy.
Yo jugue al tenis ayer. (The bold "e" should have an accent)
Yo fui a jugar al tenis ayer.
#1. Marta: Voy a practicar al piano dos horas esta noche.
Yo practique al piano dos horas anoche. (The bold "e" should have an accent)
Fui a practicar al piano dos horas anoche.
Paragraph of 8 sentences: Write a paragraph narrarating what you did yesterday, from morning till night. Use as many
of your verbs, adjectives, adverbs as you can. Be creative, make it melodramatic and funny! When you tell me what you had
for breakfast, lunch and dinner, tell me in Spanish. The Spanish II book has more menu words on page 35 and 36. Look through
your book, get familiar with it. The Reference Tables in pages 314 to 346 have a lot of information that can help you. Read pages 344-346
to know the difference between por and para. This will help you when you write.
Las veo en Jester's!

Mas nieve! (Look it up and tell me what it means by texting me or emailing me; the word "mas" is supposed to have an accent)
Classwork for Wednesday: Read "a personal" on page 92, then proceed to do Act. 5 and Act. 6.
Write out Act. 5 and just supply the "a" if it is necessary for Act. 6.
Memorize your Bible verse and know the reference (pag. 93)
Read Pronunciacion (pag. 94) and know which intonation pattern is used for statements, exclamations, commands, and information questions
and which intonation pattern is used with yes/no questions. This will be on the quiz on Friday.
In your Activities Manual page 137, do section IV- A.
The following is the vocabulary quiz for Spanish I students: Chase, Joel, Kate, Garaleigh, Emily, David, and Jacob;
8th grade Spanish I already had their quiz on Monday. (Good for you for being prepared!)
You will all have a quiz on Friday for Lesson 11, so study. See you tomorrow at Jester's!
For the following quiz, you may just highlight and print out and take or have a parent read it to you just like I do in class
and you write the correct Spanish word on notebook paper. Please remember to write your "nombre y fecha".
Once you have taken the vocabulary quiz, please check with a red pen and copy each misspelled word
(that includes wrong article and accents) three times. Turn this in along with homework on Friday.

Hola!
Just go to my previous post and see what I had already written up for you to do for Friday.
Both Spanish I and II will have Vocabulary Quiz on Monday, February 7th, so study.
It will count for grade!
Spanish I - Musical terms and instruments - 22 words
Spanish II - Automobile parts and situations - 31 terms (includes parts of car, things that happen to cars,
and things you have to do to cars before you go on a trip)
Know the words on page 134: frenos, motor, llanta, accidente, gato, bateria, deposito de gasolina, aceite, agua,
presion de aire
New car related verbs: fallar, recalentar, reventar, descargar, usar, llenar, cambiar, revisar, y tuvieron
Tuvieron un accidente = They had an accident. Tuvieron is the preterite (past tense) of tener. We will study this in lesson three
of chapter five, page 154. No need to worry about it yet!
yo tuve nosotros tuvimos
tu tuviste vosotros tuvisteis
usted, el, ella tuvo ustedes, ellos, ellas tuvieron
Spanish II girls have fun with this vocabulary, use it as a bonding moment with your fathers. Your fathers
probably deal with hispanics in their work areas and this may come in handy to help in time of need. You
never know when someone has a flat tire and you can help by translating.
Dios los bendiga!

Buenas tardes, muchachas. Que mucho frio hace, verdad? Cuidado al salir, ponte guantes, bufanda, abrigo y sombrero, porque hace mucho, mucho frio. Tambien hace mucho viento!
Time-out for English: I am blogging late because I had already told you what to do, but I am repeating instructions as well as reviewing to give you confidence. I am also adding the work for Wednesday and Thursday.
I am blogging from my laptop, and I have not yet learned how to do the accent marks or upside down punctuation marks, so just imagine the correct punctuation is there as you read the Spanish. And no, the same does not apply to you with your work, just in case you wanted to use this excuse when you turn in your homework next!
Tuesday (martes, 1 de febrero): Today you were supposed to be studying for your quiz on lesson 25.
- Know your vocabulary of house chores.
- Know how to use the phrase "acabar de"; remember that we only conjugate "acabar" not the second verb.
- Know how to conjugate all these chore verbs into the preterite (past) tense:
lavar
yo lave(con acento) nosotros lavamos
tu lavaste vosotros lavasteis
usted, el, ella lavo(con acento) ustedes, el, ella lavaron
- Know how to conjugate the yo form of the verbs that end in -car, -gar, and -zar, such as:
tocar - yo toque(con acento) marcar - yo marque(con acento) indicar - yo indique(con acento) sacar - yo saque(con acento)
aplicar - yo aplique(con acento)
jugar - yo jugue(con acento) pagar - yo pague(con acento)
almorzar - yo almorce(con acento) empezar - yo empece(con acento) comenzar - yo comence(con acento)
- Know which verbs need the preposition "a" after them when following the verb + a + infinitive:
If it is a verb of motion - ir, venir, o salir, it needs an "a" after it.
Elena va a ir a la escuela. Yo vengo a comer a tu casa hoy. Nosotros salimos a jugar baloncesto con los muchachos, y ellos nos ganaron.
If it is a verb of learning, teaching, or beginning - aprender, ensenar, empezar, comenzar, etc. it needs the "a" after it.
La Sra. Leon ensena a hablar espanol a los estudiantes de Applewood. Las muchachas de noveno grado aprenden a escribir y hablar espanol.
Applewood empieza a tener clases despues de la nieve.

Wednesday (miercoles, 2 de febrero): Take the Quiz on Lesson 25. You do not have to know the verse. Buena suerte!

Pagina 125 - Hacer secciones I - A y B
Pagina 127 - Hacer seccion III- B
Pagina 127 - Hacer seccion IV - Escribe "ir" o "ser" en el blanco, por favor
Quiz on Monday, February 7: Muchachas, deben estudiar el vocabulario del automovil y saber como conjugar el preterito de ir y de ser. Van a tener una prueba el lunes, 7 de febrero. Estudia!
PS: A good exercise would be to take "Post-it" notes or index cards and copy the vocabulary words for each part of the automobile and then go to your parent's car in your garage, hopefully, and tape it to every part on the inside. Teach your whole family how to say these words, and practice while you drive back and forth to places (although we won't be going back and forth anywhere in these next two days, but hopefully in the weekend.)

Tuesday, February 1, 2011: Study for Quiz of Lesson 10
First of all, I am blogging from my laptop and I have not yet found out how to get accent marks and upside down puctuations, so please imagine them as I write out Spanish examples:
Next, we reviewed in class for this quiz and you were given the quiz to take on Wednesday. The following is a review highlight so that you can be confident when you take the quiz.
An area I did not overemphasize is the accent marks section on page 87 under "Pronunciacion". Read that section again and read page 79 again, since the quiz will have four words in which you have to decide if they need accent marks or not and you must rewrite the ones that do with the accent mark on the correct letter.
Summary of stressing syllables and accent mark rules:
1. The stress falls on the next to the last syllable if the word ends in a vowel or in n or s.
ga - to ca - mi - no ven - ta - na co - ci -na can - ta
2. The stress falls on the last syllable if the word ends in any consonant except n or s.
a - mor doc - tor can - tar nor - mal
3. Any word that is an exception to the two rules above contains an accent mark; thus, the stress falls on the syllable containing the accented vowel.
la(con acento) - piz na - cio(con acento) n ver - si(con acento) - cu - lo
Clue: A good rule to know, in Spanish every word that ends in -cion or -sion, always has an accent on the "o".
Review: personal pronouns and verbs - Know how to conjugate:
1. yo gano 4. nosotros ganamos
2. tu ganas 5. vosotros ganais
3. usted, el, ella gana 6. ustedes, ellos, ellas ganan
Know your memory verse and reference: "Os es necesario nacer de nuevo." Juan 3:7b
Understand how to use preprositions "con" and "para" with personal pronouns and object pronouns "mi(con acento)" and "ti". Remember that mi and ti are used in the predicate, in other words, after the verb. That is what object pronouns are; they receive the action like the direct objects.
para mi(con acento) para ti para ella para nosotros para vosotros para usted
conmigo contigo con ella con nosotras con vosotras con ustedes
****************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Hello fellow thespians,
This is a reminder that you must have memorized your monologues by Wednesday. For clarification purposes, a monologue is a performance by one actor, but it can involve the performance of two or more characters. For example, I could choose to portray a monologue from the scene in Little Women where Jo and Beth are going to the theater with Laurie and Amy wants to go with them. In this scene, I as an actor portray Beth, Jo, and Amy. How do I do this? I choose to play Beth at front and center with a soothing manner and voice; I play Jo to my right with an overbearing expression and commanding voice; I play Amy to my left with a whinning voice and different facial gestures and body postures. The times I speak as a different character and / or change body positions are called transitions. These transitions must be quick, smooth, and clear to the audience. Your characterization of these roles must also be complete so that your audience will understand the scene, since they do not have the benefit of reading the lines and seeing who is speaking.
Most of your monologues for audition involve only one character speaking to another silent character. In order for the audience to see the most of your expressions and gestures, make sure you rehearse with your body in full front body position. If we have class on Friday, then we will meet in the Sanctuary where Auditions will take place.
Teaser or Introduction: Remeber to have a creative teaser in your introduction to your monologue (read the introduction page in the copies I handed out last week) and to have your monologue down to a minute. When I say a minute, I mean in your acting. Time yourself or have someone time you when you rehearse. Adapt your monologue so that it makes sense to the audience with a beginning, middle, and an end. When adapting, cut out any unnecessary bits that may be omitted because they don't really have much action or are not needed in order to make sense. Choose the parts that are intersting, funny, or give you as an actor opportunities to show your skill.
Remember, that in your audition you are judged from the moment your name is called and you stand up and begin walking to the front of the panel, be they judges in a competition or the director and assistants during an audition.
Resumes for Audition: Good job on your resumes girls. As for the students to whom I returned so that you could type and hand in with a picture please have these ready for Friday. (Emily Walton, Erin Cloud and Jacquelyn Sims) If you are able to scan or provide a picture (head shot) on paper, great! If not, then just include your school picture and I'll return after casting for the play.
Props: In a monologue competition you are not allowed costumes or props. In an audition, we do not want costumes, but if your character uses a prop or you want to incorporate a prop to augment your performance then by all means use it. (For example: a baseball cap,a lollipop, a hat, a scarf, a clipboard, etc.) This demonstrates your ambition, commitment to your acting, passion for your character, creativity, and initiative.
PS: A good trivia excercise during all this down time: Look up where the term "thespians" comes from and e-mail me your answer at dharmaleon@att.net.
Break a leg!

Warning to parents in all Spanish classes:
First of all, let me give a warning to all parents. I always tell my students to call me if they have doubts, do not understand the instructions, or do not think they know how to do the exercises. I've had some students repeatedly abuse the idea that because "I didn't understand, I don't do my homework or do it halfway". Yet none have ever called me, and only two students have ever sought me out during lunchtime or after school to get clarification. Therefore, all of my students have been warned that if they show up at school with their homework halfway done or not done, and they have not called me or e-mailed me so that I can help them, they will receive an automatic zero. I am available, and it is always my pleasure to help my students understand. Call me at (660)829-2869, or (660)473-2503.

Spanish I - Español 1
Página 85 - Actividad 5 - Just as we did in class last Friday, you will now do the second part. Take the paragraph about Peter and John healing the lame man in front of the temple and change the verbs to the informal second person - tú - ending. This time a friend is talking to Pedro about what he an Juan did to the lame man. Hint: you have to change 4 verbs to the -as ending.
Página 86 - Read top of page about the use of pronouns with prepositions.
The pronouns you have already learned are: yo, tú, usted, él, ella, nosotros, ustedes, ellos, ellas.
Now you will add the pronouns: mí and ti
Mí = me and ti = you when used as direct objects after the verb. Let me explain again. Yo and tú are first person and second person pronouns respectively, or subject pronouns. Usted is a subject and object pronoun. Mí and ti are object pronouns. Are you confused yet! Let's do some examples together.
The book gives you these sentences at the top of page 86.
El dinero no es para mí; es para ti. = The money is not for me; it is for you.
El chico está con usted, ¿no? = The boy is with you, right?
¿Trabajas para el Sr. López? - Sí trabajo para él. = Do you work for Mr. López? - Yes, I work for him.
¿Es para nosotros este pastel? - No es para ustedes, es para ellos.= Is this cake for us? - It is not for you, it is for them.
All subject pronouns are used with prepositions, except mí and ti. When we use the preposition con with mí or ti, we write it out as conmigo and contigo.
¿Deseas cantar conmigo? - ¿Contigo? No, yo canto con ella.
Do you wish to sing with me? - With you? No, I sing with her.
Pablo canta con ustedes, no canta con nosotros. = Pablo sings with you, he does not sing with us.
con + mí = conmigo; con + ti = contigo; but con él, con ella, con nosotros, con usted, con ustedes, con ellos, con ellas
Página 86: Actividad 6 - Write these dialogues as if Mayra and Manuel are speking about the people, just as in the example. (Remember: you are answering questions, so when you answer in the negative, you use a double negative, and the second "no" is right in front of the verb.)
1. Paula / no = Mayra: ¿Trabajas con Paula?
Manuel: No, no trabajo con ella. (Use the pronouns that take the place of the noun)
Página 86: Actividad 7 - Write the correct pronoun in the blank according to the noun(s) or pronoun(s) given within parentheses.
1. Hablan de _______. (Eva y Juana) = 1. Hablan de ellas.
2. La casa es de _______. (Luis y Pablo) = 2. La casa es de ellos.
Página 87: Versículo - Memorize the verse and look it up in you Bible so that you know what it means.
"Os es necesario nacer de nuevo". Juan 3:7b
(Remember, this version of the Bible in Spanish is the Reina-Valera of 1569, so it is the equivalent of the King James Version.) We'll discuss what "os" means in class on Wednesday, meanwhile see if you can figure out what it means.
Página 87: Read Pronunciación - Los acentos. Accents are very important and they can change the meaning of a word, such as:
mi = my mí = me
el = the él = he
tu = your tú = you (familiar)
que = that, which, who qué = what
solo = musical or vocal solo as in soloist sólo = only
Página 87: Nota Cultural - Read and answer the following questions and turn in on Wednesday.
1. ¿Cómo se llama la comida principal?
2. ¿Cuándo se sirve?
3. ¿Qué se toma después de la comida?
4. ¿Qué se sirve entre las seis y las ocho de la noche?
5. ¿Que es una merienda en inglés?
Quiz on Wednesday:
Verbs: Memorize the verbs at the beginning of the chapter, know what they mean and how to spell them. I will say "to speak" and you will write "hablar".
Verse: You will be quizzed on the verse in written and oral form. Make sure you practice pronounciation.

Spanish II - Español 2
Study for test on Wednesday. The test will be on what we covered in class on Friday. If you took good notes, kept your homework papers and read what I corrected on them, and study, you should ace this test.
I will also be nice and include a brief study guide of what was covered on the board and you took notes on this past Friday!
But first, let's practice new verbs and the pattern of regular verb conjugation in Spanish:
-AR Verbs: Review the -ar verbs in your Vocabulary Manual on page 40 & 42, and learn the meanings of these new verbs.
entrar = to enter ganar = to win cantar = to sing
comprar = to buy llegar = to arrive tomar = to drink, to take
trabajar = to work caminar = to walk desear = to desire, to want
desear = dese + ending
yo deseo nosotros deseamos
tú deseas vosotros deseáis (this is the formation used in Spain and in the Bible)
usted desea ustedes desean
él/ella desea ellos / ellas desean
-ER Verbs: Review the -er verbs in your Vocabulry Manual on page 70.
comprender = to understand aprender = to learn comer = to eat
beber = to drink vender = to sell escoger = to choose
creer = to believe leer = to read responder = to respond (to answer)
ver = to see (this is the only exception in conjugation)
comer = com + ending Don't get confused with "leer" and "creer"!
leer = le + ending creer = cre + ending
Yo como nosotros comemos yo leo nos. leemos yo creo nos. creemos
tú comes vosotros coméis tú lees vos. leéis tú crees vos. creéis
usted come ustedes comen ud. lee uds. leen ud. cree uds. creen
él / ella come ellos / ellas comen él/ella lee ellos/ellas leen él/ella cree ellos/ellas creen
Why is ver an exception? When you drop the -er to add the ending, you are left with just the letter "v". Thus when you conjugate for "yo" you will add an "e" and then the "o", as in "veo"
ver = v + ending
Yo veo nosotros vemos I see we see
tú ves vosotros veis you see you see (plural)
usted ve ustedes ven you see you see (plural)
él / ella ve ellos / ellas ven he / she sees they see
-IR Verbs: Review -ir verbs in Vocabulary Manual on page 74.
escribir = to write recibir = to receive vivir = to live
asistir = to attend abrir = to open cubrir = to cover
decidir = to decide descubrir = to discover permitir = to permit, to allow
prohibir = to prohibit
New -ir verb to learn: subir = to go up to, to board
subir = sub + ending
yo subo nosotros subimos I go up we go up
tú subes vosotros subís you go up you go up
usted sube ustedes suben you go up you go up
él / ella sube ellos / ellas suben he / she go up they go up
Did you notice the pattern? -Er and -ir verbs have almost the same endings, except in the pronouns nosotros and vosotros:
nosotros comemos nosotros subimos
vosotros comeis vosotros subís
What is the other pattern? The endings are basically the same for -ar, -er and -ir verbs.
-AR -ER -IR
trabajar aprender abrir
yo trabajo yo aprendo yo abro
tú trabajas tú aprendes tú abres
usted trabaja usted aprende usted abre
él / ella trabaja él / ella aprende él / ella abre
nosotros trabajamos nosotros aprendemos nosotros abrimos
vosotros trabajáis vosotros aprendéis vosotros abrís (Used in Spain and in the Bible)
ustedes trabajan ustedes aprenden ustedes abren
ellos / ellas trabajan ellos / ellas aprenden ellos / ellas abren

Spanish II
Vocabulary Manual page 88, list 16 B- Write out vocabulary words 4 times each and conjugate the verb conocer in all its present tense formations - Yo, tú, usted, él, ella, nosotros, ustedes, ellos, y ellas.
Vocabulary Manual page 76, list 13 B - Write out time expressions 4 times each. Read the following explanation about telling time and do the following exercises. You can also review in your textbook 1A, page 164 & 165.
To tell time in Spanish, use the verb ser. Es is used with one o'clock, the words for noon and midnight. Son is used with all other hours. Estar is never used to tell time.
When you hear the question - ¿Qué hora es? (What time is it?)
You answer with the sentence: Son las cinco y diez. or whatever time it is.
Remember that in Spanish, you state the hour and minutes past the hour, such as:
Son las cinco y cuarto (5:15) Son las dos y media. (2:30) Es la una. (1:00)
Es mediodía. (noon or 12:00 PM) Es medianoche. (midnight or 12:00 AM)
But after "half past," once the minute hand is past the thirty minutes, you will state the hour to come and subtract the minutes left till the next hour, such as:
Son las seis menos cuarto. (5:45) It's six minus a quater or fifteen minutes.
Son las cuatro menos veinticinco. (3:35) It's four minus twenty five minutes.
To distinguish between A.M. and P.M., Spanish speakers use the following expressions:
Son las once de la mañana. (11:00 A.M.)
Es la una de la tarde. (1:00 P.M.)
Son las siete y veinticinco de la noche. (7:25 P.M.)
Son las dos y media de la madrugada. (2:30 A.M.)
In other words, these time expressions are specific to the time of day. But when the exact hour is not mentioned or known, then Spanish speakers use the preposition por instead of de, such as:
La práctica de fútbol es por la tarde. Football practice is in the afternoon. (not exact time)
La clase de español es a las nueve de la mañana. Spanish class is at nine in the morning. (exact time)
When you want to know at what time an event will take place, you ask the question: ¿A qué hora es?
¿A qué hora es el concierto? Es a las siete y media de la noche.
Notice that the answer begins with the verb es. ¿Qué hora es? asks What time is it?
¿A qué hora? asks At what time is such an event?
Do this exercise in time expressions with the verb llegar which means to arrive. Complete the story. The first sentence states the time on the clock at the moment of the statement. Is the person late, early or on time? Use vocabulary in list 13 B.
1. Son las cuatro. Rosa tiene una reunión con su profesor las cuatro. Ella llega _____________.
2. Son las siete menos diez. Samuel tiene su clase de matemáticas a las ocho. El llega ____________.
3. Son las siete y veinte. Roberto tiene una práctica de drama a las siete de la noche. El llega ________________.
Answer the questions in Spanish by using the phrases in vocabulary list 13 B: before school, in the beginning of school, during school, at the end of school, or after school.
1. ¿Cuándo saludamos la bandera de los Estados Unidos, la bandera cristiana, y la Biblia? _________________________________________________.
