Week of Dec. 10 - 14

Dear ACS Families,

We had a fun day Friday!  It looked like Christmas around here with so many wonderful costumes!  You can see the pictures Mrs. Lansing took by going to, the password is ACS.  This is my husband’s web site where he stores all the pictures the Young family takes of ACS events, especially sports.  The pictures are put in folders by event.

One more week before Christmas break!  Melissa Backe has been counting down the days before break (as well as days left to shop) for me.  Teachers will be busy finishing up classes so students may have a few tests this week.  By Wednesday all classes should be finished up.  There will be NO homework on Thursday as ALL students are required to be at dress rehearsal practice from 10 – 1.  Please be sure your student brings a lunch in case they get hungry.  The performance of “The 12 Plays of Christmas” is Thursday evening at 7:00 pm.  Students gr. 4 – 12 are asked to be at school by 5:30.  Students gr. 1 – 3 need to be at school at 6:30.  Each family is asked to bring a plate of cookies or bars to share.

As most of you know, Mr. Nelson is getting married on Dec. 14 at 2:00 at Maplewood Church.   All ACS families are invited to attend.   In lieu of a traditional shower for Mr. Nelson and his fiancé Joy, ACS is going to have an old fashioned “pounding”.  A “pounding” is a custom dating back to Quaker founding days: When a couple would move into the neighborhood, the neighbors would get together and bring a pound of sugar, flour, or whatever, to help stock up the new neighbors cupboards. Also done for new married couples.  We are asking ACS families to bring a pound (16 oz), of something to help stock our newlywed’s pantry, to the Christmas program.  Following the program, we will have the couple open their gifts and cards.

A couple of students approached me last week and asked if the students could adopt a family for Christmas.  So ACS has adopted a family from the community who will not have Christmas this year without our help.  Students are asked to bring in money for this family by next Friday.  We will have a jar in the office to collect the student’s donations.

Each year parents are very generous in their desire to show their appreciation to the teachers.  And each year the teachers have asked that instead of gifts that parents would give donations to a charity.  This year ACS is going to partner with KDRO and support the troops in Iraq.  A list of the supplies the troops need went home with the students on Friday.  Each building will have a collection box for students to drop off supplies.

Don’t forget your exchange gift and snack to share on Friday!

Lunch Monitor needed!  We are in need of a lunch monitor for Wednesdays to watch the students.  You would need to be available from 11:15 – 12:15.  See Mrs. Young if you can help.

School Christmas Party Day – Dec. 14.  Students will have a fun morning exchanging gifts, playing games, and doing crafts.  School will get out at noon!  Each family is asked to bring in a snack for the students to share.  If your last name begins with A – M, please bring in a sweet snack.  If your last name begins with N – Z, please bring in a healthy snack.  Students should have their exchange gift wrapped with the name of the student written on it.

Golden Compass concern – A few concerned parents wanted me to pass on to the ACS parents a couple of great web sites that give information on the movie “The Golden Compass”.

Snow Day Rules To find out whether or not school has been cancelled due to snow, listen to Spirit FM (107.7 and 89.7 ), KSIS  (1050 AM ), or check the web site.  Homework for that day will be posted on each teacher’s blog by 10:00 am.  Homework given on snow days are due the following school day.

Yours In Christ,

Pamela Young
