Hello ACS,

Well, our first week went wonderfully. I hope you and your students can say the same. It seems everyone is adjusting well to the new year and I have heard great reports from the students about their classes and teachers. God has already been at work and blessing!

One important reminder: Please turn in all the forms you received at kick-off, if you have not already done so. One very important form is the milk form. We need an accurate count to order our milk cartons. Also, remember Wednesday is hot lunch; but if you have not turned in your lunch order form, please bring a lunch for that day.

Finally, I will close with a reminder of what all of us are learning in chapel. Patience is a wonderful fruit of the spirit and one in which many of us struggle. However, God has already gifted us with the fruit we simply need to rely on Him. As we adjust to the new year, please rely completely on Him.

As I sit here getting ready for school, I look back over the summer and thank God for the many ways He made this year wonderful already. Thank Him for providing a wonderful teaching staff, secretarial staff, administration, and school board! We can see God working so many details out to make this beautiful picture called ACS.

I also want to thank all who helped with and all who attended the new student orientation and kick-off. These two events were very informative, well attended, and lots of fun. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I. Thank you also to all the teachers for coming in early for meetings and for decorating the rooms.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you bright and early tomorrow as we get ready to kick-off a great new year at ACS!

Hello ACS,

As we are starting to wrap up the summer, I hope you have been praying about our new school year. I expect it to be a great year. One in which we all grow spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually.

Take a moment to let our athletes know how proud you are of them taking time away from their summer to begin practice for the season. Especially thank our coaches who take time from work and family to dedicate themselves to our sports program!! It takes sacrifice and commitment from our parent volunteers which make ACS a great school. Thank you!! Also, if you haven’t found your parent volunteer job for this school year, please call Lorna Sparks, our parent volunteer coordinator.

Now for a God-sized praise, we have all our teaching positions filled for this coming school year. We welcome Mrs. Debbie Cormican, 4^th grade; Miss Jennifer Trent, 5^th-7^th grades; Mrs. Connie McCray, 8^th-12^th grades; Mrs. Melissa Bussey, 8^th-12^th grades; Miss Andrea Self, 8^th-12^th grades; and Mrs. Gina Kjar, physical education. Please take time at the kick off to introduce yourselves.

Well, school time is getting closer!! Did you know it is exactly one month until our new student orientation and less than ten days till the pool party! I am looking forward to seeing you all there! It’s always so much fun to see everyone after the summer. It’s amazing how much everyone grows and changes after just a few months.

Just a few updates for now. Be prepared to find a new, exciting look in the CEL and in the office. We have a crew of adults and teens preparing to paint the classrooms and the Awana room. They are meeting Monday the 19^th at 9 am if anyone would like to join them. All we ask is that you bring your own brushes and rollers and that you supervise any elementary students.

Another piece of news: No MAACS this year. I know some are rejoicing at this and others are saying, what is that. MAACS is a fine arts/academic competition in which we have participated. The MAACS committee and academic committee met this summer and recommended to the board that we not participate this year and explore other competitions and the board approved. For this year, students will have the option to participate in the SBU Regional Competition in the fall for high school students and at Blue Ridge Christian in the spring for 7-12 grades. We are currently looking at doing something in house for the 4-6 grade. If you would be interested in helping plan this event, please let us know!

Hello to all of ACS! We hope you are having a wonderful summer. In between getting ready for this upcoming school year, we have enjoyed some rest and relaxation. We are very excited about what the Lord has been doing in preparing us for our new challenge as co-principals of ACS. You will see many new faces this year as administration changes, teachers change, and students change. Hope you are as excited about it as we are!

For the rest of the summer, please periodically check the website for new bulletins and calendar additions. The calendar is consistently changing as games and other items are continually added.

One new item to note on the calendar: ACT testing dates. If you click on a certain date, it will tell you the deadline for registering for that particular one. You may register at www.actstudent.org. Sophomores you are not too young to think about taking this test. Juniors it is highly recommended you do so this school year. And seniors, you need to take it as soon as possible as this affects many scholarship opportunities.

Be looking for a postcard this month with details about the pool party.

Finally, students, I hope you are reading for the summer reading program. We don't want the end of summer to sneak up on you and then you need to cram. Remember, this only stimulates your mind and helps you become a better student in the long run. :)

Announcements:
Kindergarten Graduation – Tuesday, May 11 at 6:30 pm. The parents of the kindergarten class invite all teachers, students, and parents of ACS to attend their graduation ceremony. Guest speaker for the event is recent graduate Nathan Church. There will be a reception immediately following. Kindergarten students and their families need to be at school by 5:45 for pictures.

Teacher farewell - At the kindergarten graduation we will be saying farewell to the following teachers: Mr. Bergman, Mrs. Marsh, & Mrs. Pifer.

"The Big Bad Musical" is on DVD! Filmed & edited by Jeremy Howard, Melissa Backe's fiancé'. Own your own copy for $10. On Sale in the office.

Clean up Day – Thursday, May 27 from 8 am to noon. There is much to do to close down the school at the end of the year! There are desks to put up, supplies to store, and everything needs a good cleaning. Students in grades 5 – 12 are required to attend. Participation for students in grades K- 4 is optional but need to be accompanied by a parent if they attend.

Paint crews needed! Mrs. Rehmer is looking for parents interested in painting the elementary rooms this summer. Contact the office if you can help.

Book Turn In day – May 26 & 27. All school books (including solution manuals), except the consumable books that have the students name written on the cover, need to be turned in on one of these days. Students will receive their report cards after all books have been turned in and all financial obligations have been met for the 2009-2010 school year.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of the “Big Bad Musical”. It was a complete success! As I said “goodbye” to the people that had attended the play, they all had wonderful words of encouragement. Many that had seen several of our productions said that this was their “favorite”, I know it was mine. I was honored and touched that you would dedicate your performance to me. The drama program at ACS has always been important to me because God used my participation in a drama production when I was in 9th grade to radically transform my life. I pray that you listen to His call and glorify Him while you live your “Happily Ever After”.

Parent involvement assessment – as this year comes to a close it is a good time to take a look at parent involvement with the school. We will be sending an assessment to your home in the mail for you to evaluate your efforts. This is for you alone! Please do not send in anything to the office. Coaches needed for next year! If you are interested in coaching (or assistant coaching) the following sports, please contact Mr. Lansing, the athletic director: varsity boys’ soccer, junior high boys’ soccer, and junior high girls’ basketball.

Dress code reminder - With the arrival of warmer weather, I just wanted to remind parents of some dress code rules. Shorts need to be fingertip length. No holes in jeans. No sleeveless shirts with large arm holes. No spaghetti straps. Shirts should be long enough that when you raise your arms your belly is not showing. Bring sneakers for PE if you are wearing flip-flops. No hats or sunglasses inside the buildings.

Thanks to the students and parents that attended the first Clean Up day. Luke, you really kept Mrs. Young entertained. Kinser, every muscle in my body was screaming by that night. I don’t know how you managed to do ten times the work I did but I am really glad you did!

Thanks to all the many parents that helped make the “Big Bad Musical” all that it could be. From dresses to judges benches; from hair to makeup; from food to programs; we couldn’t do it without the help from our parents! Thanks for your support!

A special thank you to Mrs. Leon and Mrs. Harshner for their tireless efforts on behalf of our students. There is one little wolf that sure would not be where she is without the two of you in her life.

Parents,
     It is hard to believe that there is only three more weeks of school left! It is pretty busy around here trying to finalize one school year and making preparations for the next.
     Student Council Elections were held this week. The following individuals represent our student leadership for next year: President - Drew Wedemeyer, Vice-President – Mariah Wassam, Treasurer – Kirstin Bergman, Secretary – Savannah Crosier, and Sentinels – Mary Drenon & Katie Wassam. Congratulations to our new student leaders!
     The “Big Bad Musical” is being performed this Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 5pm.   The fairy tale creatures have put the big bad wolf on trial for being “big” and “bad”. Come see this fractured fairy tale with your family and you be the jury. Is the wolf innocent or guilty? Tickets are $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for children, and $1.00 off if you come in a fairy tale costume.
     In the next coming weeks we will be working to interview new families for the few student openings we have left. We will also be looking to fill teacher positions and parent job positions long held by many of our older families. If you have not signed up for your parent job for next year, please do so soon. We will be offering new families any positions not filled at the time of their interview.
     Continue to pray for the teachers, students, and administration as this school year comes to a close that we would all end the year doing our best. Please also be in prayer for the new administration, Mrs. Herrington & Mrs. Church as they have already begun the job of planning for the new school year.

Teacher Meeting – Monday, April 26 at 3:45

Clean up Days – Maplewood is having their clean-up day this Saturday, May 1 from 8am – 12. There will be many things that will need to be accomplished after school is let out so Applewood will be having our own clean-up day on Saturday, May 22. Students will be required to sign up for one of the two days to help clean up the school. Students in grades K-3 need to be accompanied by a parent please. Sign up sheets will go home tomorrow.

Lost & Found - There is a table just within the door of the ROC piled high with clothes, water bottles, and misc. other items. Please come and look through the items and make sure that nothing belongs to your child. Any remaining items will be packed up Friday afternoon and brought to the Salvation Army.

St. Louis Zoo field trip. Permission slips need to be turned into the office. We are in need of one bus driver; a few chaperone/drivers to take the younger students; and some chaperones to ride the bus and escort the junior and senior high students.

Parents,
What a great time we had at the prom this weekend! The prom committee did a wonderful job decorating the Woman’s Building at the State Fair grounds into a beautiful Asian ballroom. The students and parents both had a fun time eating Chinese food, dancing, and visiting. What we were not expecting was that Smith-Cotton also had their prom that night in the building next to ours. The Sheriff’s cars and metal detectors made a sharp contrast to our prom where the worst we had to worry about was one of the parents hurting themselves while dancing! The students next door would probably have been horrified to learn that there were just as many parents as there were students at our prom. It made me proud to think that our kids enjoy spending time with us and can have fun even with mom & dad in their presence. It gives me hope for the future.

Hello Parents,
The Parent Appreciation dinner put on by the Student Council members Saturday night was a wonderful event! The high school students discussed the idea of giving back to the parents and came up with an evening of dinner, music, games, and fellowship. Senior Kasey Blake came up with the idea and was head cook of the evening. Her chicken fettuccini alfredo was the best I have ever tasted! Dinner was a relaxed event with parents visiting and getting to know the other parents. After dessert many of the parents stayed to play games. A rambunctious game of “farkle” was soon underway while I preferred the more cut throat card game of “hand-and-foot”. Throughout the night we were treated to “old school” music as our DJ termed it (we used to call them “oldies”). Though less than a half of the families were represented that night, it was a tremendous success for those that attended. Thank you students for thinking of us moms and dads!

Announcements:
High School Night - Monday, April 12th at 7:00pm. This is a mandatory meeting for students in grades 8 - 12 along with at least one of their parents. We will be talking about class schedules, graduation requirements, college sport requirements, and many other topics.

Senior/Junior Prom tickets are on sale now! Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased in the office. Parents are encouraged to attend!

Resurrection Break – April 1 – 6. No school! See you on Wednesday!

Lunch Forms should be in for April. If you have not sent in your form, your student can not have lunch on Wednesday unless you have contacted Mrs. Crosier by Monday.

School wide Easter Egg Hunt – Friday, April 8 during lunch recess. Each student is asked to bring a dozen filled eggs. Eggs can be filled with gum, candy, stickers, erasers, etc. Please NO money, eggs with money will be emptied and the money donated to the school. Homeroom moms are asked to be at school by 10:30 to hide eggs. Younger siblings are allowed to participate as long as they bring a dozen eggs.

Please return the Parent jobs form sent out last week. All questions should be addressed to Lorna Sparks the coordinator of the parent job program.

Smithton looking for girls to play U-12 softball. Contact Mr. Loomis at 287-0762.

Pancake Breakfast on Sat, April 10th, 8am-10am at Applebee's to raise funds for the Boston trip. Tickets are $5 a piece and can be purchased in the office.

April 10th at 6pm the Student Council will be hosting a Parent Appreciation Dinner in honor of our parents and all that they do for us throughout the year! It will be an evening of dinner and games. Child care is provided.

ACS Girls Soccer game – Come out to the first game of the varsity Lady Mustangs soccer team Friday, April 9th at 5:00 at Paul Klover Field.

High School Night - Monday, April 12th at 7:00pm. Students in grades 8 - 12 and at least one parent is required to attend. We will be talking about class schedules, graduation requirements, college sport requirements, and many other topics. This is one meeting you should NOT miss!

Pictures for the yearbook. If you have any great pictures that you think the yearbook staff could use for this year’s yearbook we have an easy way you can upload them to our file. An email will be sent to your address with easy directions. Photos we are needing: Christmas party and Thanksgiving Feast.

Hello Parents & Students,
     Our trips to MAACS went well. We were able to see students do amazing speeches and wondrous, musical pieces. We were impressed and inspired by works of art made of different things from clay to puzzle pieces. Our students did an excellent job being quiet and respectful when watching performances. They represented our school and our God with excellence and looked great doing it! The trips back and forth on the bus were enjoyable for the students and for me.
     Despite the benefits of MAACS, this event, more than any other we do, tends to bring out the worst in us. We moan and groan over the dress code.
We see their rules as too strict; we label them as “legalistic” and therefore feel they do not deserve to be followed. We look for ways to “cheat” the system instead of recognizing that these are directives from the authority over us that we are called to obey.
     Instead of looking at this as an opportunity, we complain about why we shouldn’t be participating. Unfairness of the judging is a common complaint. Stories about past grievances have become legendary and are allowed to color our view about competing.
     We whine that the school is making us participate at all. Instead of facing the challenge we are given and working to the best of our abilities, we choose to do something that takes the least amount of effort so that we can say that we did our part.
     Parents, what are we teaching our children? Are we teaching them to obey their authority figures, and therefore obey God? Or are we teaching them to obey only when it is convenient or when it coincides with what we want to do? Pray about this, I know I have.

Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.” Romans 13:1-7

Testing:
During the week of the Iowa Basic Testing, students have no classes and no homework. Students need to be at school at 8:15, testing begins at 8:30, students need to go directly to their testing area:

                    Grades K – 3 will be testing in their own classrooms.
                    Grades 4 – 6 will be testing upstairs in the CEL.
                    Grades 7 & 8 will be testing in room 202 in the ROC.
                    Grades 9 – 11 will be testing in room 200 in the ROC.

Parents need to ensure that students get a good night sleep before a testing day. Also students need to be fed a good breakfast that morning. Students should bring the following for each testing day: two #2 pencils, a good eraser, a snack, a water bottle, and a book to read. High school students need to bring a calculator as well. Testing ends around 11:30, parents need to pick up their students at that time.

Dear Parents & Students,
We are in our final quarter of the school year. Where did the time go? We need to be on guard that spring fever, senioritis, or just plain laziness doesn’t set in as we round the final turn to the end of this school year. It is easy to let the warm weather (?), the impending summer vacation, graduation, or our sin nature to influence us to slack off on our efforts to learn and to teach. It is important to finish strong by doing our best right up until May 13th; whether you are a principal, a teacher, a student, or a parent. Let’s all work hard to make the most of these last two months of school!

Announcements:

The Bookmobile will be coming to ACS on Friday March 26 from 1:50 to 2:50 this month. Grades 7-12 need to bring their books in NO LATER than Wednesday, March 24 so they can be checked in as they will not be in school that day.

HS MAACS field trip – (gr. 7 – 12) March 26. Permission slips went out last week and deed to be returned to the office by Monday. This is a mandatory school day, unless you have worked out an alternate plan with Mrs. Young, you are expected to attend. Please note the dress and hair requirements. Parents interested in chaperoning either trip, are asked to call the office this week.

Senior Meeting – Thursday, March 25 at 7:30 at the Blake’s house. We will be discussing the expenses, format, and tasks surrounding 2010 graduation. All seniors and at least one parent is required to attend.

Testing:
Tuesday, March 23 - Cognitive Testing for grades 3, 7, & 9. Students need to be to school by 8:15 am and will need to be picked up around 11:30am. Students need to bring: two #2 pencils, a good eraser, a snack, a water bottle, and a book to read. Reading homework only.

Sponsor a page in the 2009-2010 yearbook! A form went out last week for sponsoring yearbook pages. Please return that form to the office Monday. A form will go out for ordering a yearbook in the near future.

Great Escape for grades 9 & 10 is postponed until April 24th.

New tuition box in the office. There is a wooden box on the shelf in the office with a lock on it for all payments. Forms and report cards will continue to be turned into the gray box on the shelf in the office.

Thanks to all the families that supported the many fund raising events for the Costa Rica team. The Long John Silvers fund raiser brought in $102!

Please continue to support the Boston team as they continue to raise funds for their trip.

Spring Sports (Basketball) awards night – Thursday, March 18 at 6pm. This is for players, coaches, parents, and fans of JH, JV, & Varsity basketball teams. Students will receive the sports pictures they ordered, certificates and awards will be given, and their will be a slide show of all the players. Each family is asked to bring a dessert to share.

Teachers – Grades are due tomorrow. If you need a sub to take your class while you write in your grades, please tell the office first thing in the morning. Also, please turn in your “reclaiming the time” surveys.

Praise for a successful mission trip for the17 high school students and 5 adults that went to East St. Louis to the Christian Activity Center (CAC) this last Thursday & Friday.

Continued prayer for the mission team in Costa Rica as they are returning this Monday evening.

     I was reminded of something this weekend - the importance of prayer. I just spent three days in Omaha, Nebraska at the Christian Home School regional basketball tournament. After both the girls and the boys lost their first game on Thursday evening and I was dealing with the disappointment my daughter was feeling, the Holy Spirit reminded me that I had not been praying for this event. Even though winning the tournament was extremely important to my daughter, I had failed to pray for their success or their safety, focusing instead on praying for the Costa Rica mission trip.
     Later when we were transporting the students going to Costa Rica from the tournament to the hotel in St. Louis, one of the vans stopped working. After the group prayed for the vehicle, it was able to be started up again.
     Does your busyness get in the way of your prayer time? John Wesley explains the correlation between busyness and prayer this way. “I have so much to do that I spend several hours in prayer before I am able to do it.” We need to remember that no matter how busy our life is, that prayer is essential for every success, be it a basketball game, a mission trip, or the completion of our day. Prayer should be an action we undertake each day to prepare us for the next day not a reaction to the events in our lives.
     Writer Chip Brogden explained the importance of prayer this way: “If God will do whatever He wishes, regardless of whether we pray or not, then we do not need to pray at all, and the Lord's instructions on praying for the Kingdom and the Will are superfluous. But the truth is that God waits for a Remnant to rise up and to pray in agreement with His Purpose before He does anything - He will do nothing apart from the Church. Apart from HIM, we CAN do nothing; apart from US, He WILL do nothing.”

Congratulations to the Varsity Boys Basketball team who took third place in the tournament and the Varsity Girls Basketball team that ended up in 6th place. Thanks to the coaches for their dedication and time. We had a very successful season!
