Snow Day - 15 de febrero del 2010 - Spanish I, II y Experiential

Warning to parents in all Spanish classes:

First of all, let me give a warning to all parents.  I always tell my students to call me if they have doubts, do not understand the instructions, or do not think they know how to do the exercises.  I've had some students repeatedly abuse the idea that because "I didn't understand, I don't do my homework or do it halfway".  Yet none have ever called me, and only two students have ever sought me out during lunchtime or after school to get clarification.  Therefore, all of my students have been warned that if they show up at school with their homework halfway done or not done, and they have not called me or e-mailed me so that I can help them, they will receive an automatic zero.  I am available, and it is always my pleasure to help my students understand.  Call me at (660)829-2869, or (660)473-2503.

Spanish I - Español 1

Página 85 - Actividad 5 - Just as we did in class last Friday, you will now do the second part.  Take the paragraph about Peter and John healing the lame man in front of the temple and change the verbs to the informal second person - tú - ending.  This time a friend is talking to Pedro about what he an Juan did to the lame man.  Hint: you have to change 4 verbs to the -as ending.

Página 86 - Read top of page about the use of pronouns with prepositions.

The pronouns you have already learned are:  yo, tú, usted, él, ella, nosotros, ustedes, ellos, ellas.

Now you will add the pronouns:  and ti

Mí = me   and  ti = you when used as direct objects after the verb.  Let me explain again.  Yo and  are first person and second person pronouns respectively, or subject pronouns.  Usted is a subject and object pronoun.  and ti are object pronouns. Are you confused yet!   Let's do some examples together.

 The book gives you these sentences at the top of page 86.

El dinero no es para mí; es para ti.     =      The money is not for me; it is for you.

El chico está con usted, ¿no?        =           The boy is with you, right?

¿Trabajas para el Sr. López?  - Sí trabajo para él. =  Do you work for Mr. López? -  Yes, I work for him.

¿Es para nosotros este pastel? - No es para ustedes, es para ellos.= Is this cake for us? - It is not for you, it is for them.

All subject pronouns are used with prepositions, except mí and ti.  When we use the preposition con with  or ti, we write it out as conmigo and contigo.

¿Deseas cantar conmigo? - ¿Contigo?  No, yo canto con ella

Do you wish to sing with me? - With you?  No, I sing with her.

Pablo canta con ustedes, no canta con nosotros. =  Pablo sings with you, he does not sing with us

con + mí = conmigo;  con + ti = contigo;  but con él, con ella, con nosotros, con usted, con ustedes, con ellos, con ellas

Página 86: Actividad 6 - Write these dialogues as if Mayra and Manuel are speking about the people, just as in the example.  (Remember: you are answering questions, so when you answer in the negative, you use a double negative, and the second "no" is right in front of the verb.)

1.  Paula / no =   Mayra:  ¿Trabajas con Paula?

                         Manuel:  No, no trabajo con ella.    (Use the pronouns that take the place of the noun)

Página 86: Actividad 7 - Write the correct pronoun in the blank according to the noun(s) or pronoun(s) given within parentheses.

1.  Hablan de _______.  (Eva y Juana)        =    1.  Hablan de ellas.

 2. La casa es de _______.  (Luis y Pablo)   =    2.  La casa es de ellos.

Página 87:  Versículo - Memorize the verse and look it up in you Bible so that you know what it means.

"Os es necesario nacer de nuevo".  Juan 3:7b

(Remember, this version of the Bible in Spanish is the Reina-Valera of 1569, so it is the equivalent of the King James Version.)  We'll discuss what "os" means in class on Wednesday, meanwhile see if you can figure out what it means.

Página 87: Read Pronunciación - Los acentos.  Accents are very important and they can change the meaning of a word, such as:

mi = my      = me

el = the       él = he

tu = your     = you (familiar)

que = that, which, who             qué = what

solo = musical or vocal solo as in soloist            sólo = only

Página 87: Nota Cultural - Read and answer the following questions and turn in on Wednesday.

1.  ¿Cómo se llama la comida principal?

2.  ¿Cuándo se sirve?

3.  ¿Qué se toma después de la comida?

4.  ¿Qué se sirve entre las seis y las ocho de la noche?

5.  ¿Que es una merienda en inglés?

Quiz on Wednesday:

Verbs: Memorize the verbs at the beginning of the chapter, know what they mean and how to spell them.  I will say "to speak" and you will write "hablar".

Verse:  You will be quizzed on the verse in written and oral form.  Make sure you practice pronounciation.

Spanish II - Español 2

Study for test on Wednesday.  The test will be on what we covered in class on Friday.  If you took good notes, kept your homework papers and read what I corrected on them, and study, you should ace this test.

I will also be nice and include a brief study guide of what was covered on the board and you took notes on this past Friday!

But first, let's practice new verbs and the pattern of regular verb conjugation in Spanish:

-AR Verbs:  Review the -ar verbs in your Vocabulary Manual on page 40 & 42, and learn the meanings of these new verbs.

entrar = to enter             ganar = to win                   cantar = to sing

comprar = to buy           llegar = to arrive                 tomar = to drink, to take

trabajar = to work           caminar = to walk               desear = to desire, to want

desear = dese + ending

yo deseo            nosotros deseamos

tú deseas           vosotros deseáis (this is the formation used in Spain and in the Bible)

usted dese      ustedes desean

él/ella dese      ellos / ellas desean

-ER Verbs:  Review the -er verbs in your Vocabulry Manual on page 70.

comprender = to understand                aprender = to learn               comer = to eat

beber = to drink                                 vender = to sell                     escoger = to choose

creer = to believe                              leer = to read                        responder = to respond (to answer)

ver = to see  (this is the only exception in conjugation)

comer = com + ending                      Don't get confused with "leer" and "creer"!

                                                         leer = le + ending              creer = cre + ending

Yo  como       nosotros comemos        yo le    nos. leemos        yo cre     nos. creemos

tú comes        vosotros coméis            tú lees     vos. leéis            tú crees    vos. creéis

usted come     ustedes comen             ud. le    uds. leen            ud. cree     uds. creen

él / ella come   ellos / ellas comen        él/ella le ellos/ellas leen    él/ella cre ellos/ellas creen

Why is ver an exception?  When you drop the -er to add the ending, you are left with just the letter "v".  Thus when you conjugate for "yo"  you will add an "e" and then the "o", as in "veo"

ver = v + ending

Yo veo               nosotros vemos                      I see               we see

ves                 vosotros veis                         you see           you see (plural)

usted v            ustedes ven                           you see           you see (plural)

él / ella ve          ellos / ellas ven                       he / she sees   they see

-IR Verbs:  Review -ir verbs in Vocabulary Manual on page 74.

escribir = to write              recibir = to receive               vivir = to live

asistir = to attend              abrir = to open                     cubrir = to cover

decidir = to decide           descubrir = to discover          permitir = to permit, to allow

prohibir = to prohibit

New -ir verb to learn:    subir = to go up to, to board

subir = sub + ending

yo sub                nosotros subimos                       I go up                we  go up

tú subes                vosotros subís                            you go up           you go up

usted sub           ustedes suben                            you go up           you go up

él / ella sube         ellos / ellas suben                        he / she go up     they go up

Did you notice the pattern?  -Er and -ir verbs have almost the same endings, except in the pronouns nosotros and vosotros:

nosotros comemos           nosotros subimos

vosotros comeis               vosotros subís

What is the other pattern?  The endings are basically the same for -ar, -er and -ir verbs.

-AR                                -ER                             -IR

trabajar                          aprender                     abrir

yo trabajo                       yo aprend                  yo abro

tú trabajas                       tú aprendes                  tú abres

usted trabaj                  usted aprend              usted abre

él / ella trabaja                él / ella aprende             él / ella abre

nosotros trabajamos       nosotros aprendemos    nosotros abrimos

vosotros trabajáis           vosotros aprendéis         vosotros abrís  (Used in Spain and in the Bible)

ustedes trabajan            ustedes aprenden           ustedes abren

ellos / ellas trabajan        ellos / ellas aprenden      ellos / ellas abren
